 Date/Time: September 9th, 2023. 10:30AM-11:30AM Tutee: Shrouq Saied Location: Strozier Library Topic/Skill: Pronunciation and vocabulary Feedback provided to tutee: After reading an article out loud, I helped my tutee with the pronunciation of certain words, along with helping her learn new vocabulary through context clues and critical thinking. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or tutee: This session, I learned that ESL students enjoy learning and retain more information when given the opportunity to "investigate" new vocabulary words through context clues while reading. Giving them a chance to associate the new word with the text they're reading helps them remember it better, since it allows for them to create a mental image of the word rather than simply learning a definition. She was a bit shy to guess at first because of the fear of making mistakes, but with a lot of encouragement and over time, she quickly grew much more confident in her educated guesses, even if she w...

 Date/Time: September 8th, 2023. 12:45PM-1:45PM Tutee: Shrouq Saied Location: Innovation Hub Topic/Skill: Introductory questions/Reading diagnostic Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected some minor grammar mistakes and helped her with vocabulary Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or tutee: My tutee really enjoys spoken conversation and is eager to learn! She sometimes has difficulties with speaking too quickly, and ends up making grammar or vocabulary mistakes in the process as a result of that. Based on her past experiences with learning English, I found out that she learned and partially acquired the language through immersion, especially movies and music. At a younger age, she had a teacher who would focus on memorization and behaviorism for a different foreign language, which was vastly ineffective (as we learned in class). Most importantly, today I learned that ESL students want opportunities to use the language, mostly through speaking, even in classroom environments. All in all i...
