Lesson(s)
about tutoring and/or tutee: This session, I learned that ESL students enjoy learning and retain more information when given the opportunity to "investigate" new vocabulary words through context clues while reading. Giving them a chance to associate the new word with the text they're reading helps them remember it better, since it allows for them to create a mental image of the word rather than simply learning a definition. She was a bit shy to guess at first because of the fear of making mistakes, but with a lot of encouragement and over time, she quickly grew much more confident in her educated guesses, even if she wasn't always right. Basically, mistakes should be encouraged and expressed as learning opportunities. Great session overall!
