Noah TS Blog 11/28/23
This session took place on 11/28/23 with Youngjune.
During our recent language tutoring session, Youngjune and I embarked on a diverse and engaging exploration that spanned the realms of language, culture, and the digital landscape, notably delving into the expansive world of Minecraft. Our discussions unfolded organically, seamlessly transitioning between various topics to provide a well-rounded linguistic experience.
In the Minecraft realm, we navigated through different modes, unraveling the distinct challenges and creative opportunities presented by creative, survival, and adventure modes. This virtual exploration not only tapped into gaming terminology but also provided a unique avenue for language enrichment.
Our linguistic journey continued with a focus on expanding Youngjune's vocabulary. Words such as "subscription," "cog/gear," "totem," "cypress," and "bark" took center stage, prompting discussions about their meanings and cultural connotations. This vocabulary exercise served as a bridge to broader conversations about the diverse contexts in which these words find application.
Expressive language and idioms became part of our discussion, with a deep dive into the metaphorical concept of feeling "butterflies in your stomach" and the temporal notion encapsulated in "time flies when you're having fun." These expressions not only enriched Youngjune's language skills but also offered cultural insights tied to these linguistic nuances.
Shifting gears to literary concepts, we explored the intriguing world of non-linear narratives, using Kurt Vonnegut's work as an illustrative example. This exploration highlighted the versatility of storytelling and broadened Youngjune's understanding of narrative structures.
Venturing into philosophical discussions, we delved into the works of Byung Chul-Han, focusing on the concept of Dyschronia. Drawing parallels to the term dyslexia, we uncovered the roots of the word to decipher its meaning within Han's philosophical framework. This intellectual exploration added a layer of depth to our understanding of temporal concepts and linguistic interpretations.
Our linguistic journey also extended to words with unique cultural and sensory associations. We discussed "acrophobia," delving into the fear of heights, and contemplated the richness of the word "aroma" in both its literal and metaphorical dimensions.
